Oxyglobin / HBOC-301 — regulatory approval, clinical efficacy, oxygen delivery & scientific evidence.

Oxyglobin is hemoglobin glutamer-200 (bovine), developed as HBOC-301. This evidence page separates regulatory approval, clinical efficacy, direct comparison with packed red blood cells and oxygen-delivery research from any future BHOC formulation.

FDA pivotal efficacy

95% vs 32% treatment success in the efficacy population.

The original FDA field trial enrolled 64 client-owned anaemic dogs: 30 randomized to Oxyglobin and 34 to untreated control. Treatment success meant no additional oxygen-carrying support during the following 24 hours; it was not a survival endpoint.

Efficacy population: 20/21 (95%) Oxyglobin vs 9/28 (32%) control, p≤0.001. Intent-to-treat: 22/30 (73%) vs 10/34 (29%), p≤0.001.

EMA cause-stratified efficacy

100% treatment success in two evaluable anaemia strata.

The EMA scientific discussion reports treatment success by cause of anaemia using the same 24-hour efficacy concept: no additional oxygen-carrying support was required during the efficacy window.

Blood-loss anaemia

90% vs 45%

Oxyglobin 90% treatment success vs 45% control.

Haemolytic anaemia

100% vs 9%

Oxyglobin 100% treatment success vs 9% control.

Ineffective erythropoiesis

100% vs 50%

Oxyglobin 100% treatment success vs 50% control.

How to read “100%”: all evaluable Oxyglobin-treated dogs in that cause-of-anaemia stratum met the 24-hour treatment-success endpoint. This is not a 100% survival or cure claim.

Prospective randomized clinical comparison · 2009

Oxyglobin vs packed red blood cells in canine babesiosis.

Zambelli AB, Leisewitz AL. Twelve dogs with naturally occurring Babesia rossi anaemia were randomized to Oxyglobin or packed red blood cell transfusion. The study reported similar overall improvements in blood-gas, acid-base and blood-pressure measures, while packed cells tended to normalize habitus and appetite more rapidly.

Curation note

Similar titles are not automatically duplicate publications.

The British Journal of Anaesthesia paper PMID 11575346 and the related Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia record PMID 28404246 are retained as separate records. The former must not replace the latter.

The historical parasite-induced anaemia record bhoc-056 remains in the bibliography but is explicitly marked SOURCE VERIFICATION REQUIRED until a sufficiently reliable primary PMID or DOI is established.
